Pour rien ne vous cacher, notre cinquième et sans doute dernier écrivain invité (sauf surprise de dernière minute pour un écrivain qu'on adore, ils seront cinq au lieu de six cette année) à l'édition 2018 du Festival est l'une des idoles de notre directrice et présidente Marie Musy. C'est peu dire que sa réponse positive a eu un effet très particulier sur tout le comité! Et pour la première fois, nous aurons un Prix Pulitzer à L'Amérique à Oron! Le célèbre écrivain du Maine, Richard Russo, nous fera en effet l'honneur d’être parmi nous en terres vaudoises pour trois jours. Bienvenu à l'un des plus importants romanciers américains de tous les temps!

Vénéré aux Etats-Unis, l'une des plus grandes influences pour des générations d'auteurs américains, très sollicité pour des lectures et conférences, Richard Russo peut sembler un peu moins connu et surtout moins médiatisé en Europe. Et pourtant, à part un recueil de nouvelles non traduit, tous ses huit romans, plus un récit et un autre recueil de nouvelles, ont été traduits en français (Editions de la Table Ronde/Quai Voltaire). Son dernier roman paru en août 2017, A malin, malin et demi a été récompensé l'automne dernier par le Grand Prix de Littérature Américaine 2017.

Son roman Nobody’s Fool (Un homme presque parfait) publié en 1993 aux Etats-Unis a été adapté l'année d'après au cinéma par Robert Benton avec notamment Paul Newman et Melanie Griffith. Richard Russo a ensuite été le lauréat du prestigieux Prix Pulitzer pour l'admirable et sublime Déclin de l'Empire Whiting (Empire Falls, 2001) en 2002. Une bonne partie de ses romans se situent dans le nord de l’Etat de New-York, dans des villes imaginaires, petites villes de l'Amérique provinciale, à la population «middle class» et cols bleus désabusée. Parfois comparé à John Irving, il est à la fois un conteur-obervateur facétieux et un chroniqueur social épatant, dont la plume gracieuse et compatissante ne se prive pas de tremper dans un humour décapant.

Richard Russo est originaire de l’Etat de New York. Avant de devenir écrivain à l’âge de 37 ans avec son premier roman publié (Mohawk), il a été professeur de littérature. Il a obtenu un doctorat de philosophie en 1979 et un Master of Fine Arts en 1980 à l'Université d'Arizona. Il vit actuellement et écrit dans l'Etat du Maine avec sa femme et ses deux filles.

We’re not keeping anything from you, our fifth and probably last invited author to the 2018 edition of the Festival (barring a last minute surprise for an author we love, we will have five instead of six authors this year) is one of our chair and president Marie Musy’s idols. It is an understatement to say that the entire committee was very pleased by his confirmation! And for the first time ever, we will have a Pulitzer Prize at America in Oron! The renowned author from Maine, Richard Russo, will honor us with his presence for three days in the Swiss countryside. We would thus like to welcome one of the most important American novelists of all time!

 

Greatly admired in the United States, one of the greatest influences for generations of American authors, and in high demand for lectures and conferences, Richard Russo might seem less well-known and especially less publicized in Europe. And yet, a part from an untranslated collection of short stories, all eight of his novels, as well as a memoir and another short story collection, were translated into French (Editions de la Table Ronde/Quai Voltaire). His latest novel, released in August 2017, Everybody’s Fool, was awarded the 2017 American Literature Grand Prize.

 

His novel Nobody’s Fool, published in 1993 in the United States, was adapted for the screen a year later by Robert Benton and starred Paul Newman and Meanie Griffith, notably. Richard Russo then received the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for his admirable and sublime Empire Falls (published in 2001) in 2002. The greater part of his novels take place in northern New York State, in imaginary towns, those small towns of rural America whose inhabitants are the disenchanted blue collar middle class. Sometimes compared to John Irving, he is both a mischievous bystander-storyteller and an outstanding social chronicler. His elegant writing is compassionate and he does not hesitate to dabble in caustic humor.

 

Richard Russo is originally from New York State. Before becoming a writer with his first published novel (Mohawk) at age 37, he was a professor of English literature. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1979 and a Masters of Fine Arts in 1980, both from the University of Arizona. He now lives and writes in Maine with his wife and two daughters.

Jean Hegland

 

 

«Je me dis parfois que ce serait tellement mieux si l’on devait taire nos désirs, nous débarrasser de notre besoin d’eau et d’abri et de nourriture. Pourquoi s’embête-t-on avec tout ça? A quoi cela sert-il? Hormis tenir un peu plus longtemps.»

L’écrivaine californienne Jean Hegland, auteure de la meilleure vente de la Librairie du Midi en 2017 avec son puissant roman Dans la forêt, est de retour à Oron après son passage remarqué en janvier 2017. Ne la manquez surtout pas cette fois-ci! Charmante et adorable personnalité qui nous vient de Californie du Nord, dans une région entourée de grandes et hautes forêts. Et c’est peu dire que Dans la forêt vous emmène «pour de bon» au plus profond des coeurs forestiers…

 

Son plus célèbre roman, paru il y a 21 ans aux Etats-Unis et traduit seulement en 2017 en français aux éditions Gallmeister, raconte la vie et la survie de deux adolescentes, Nell et Eva, en pleine forêt de Californie alors que le monde contemporain civilisé vacille ou s’écroule même peut-être. Les filles sont bloquées dans la maison familiale au milieu d’une clairière. Les premiers voisins sont à six kilomètres et la première ville à 50 km. Leur mère est décédée d’une maladie et leur père meurt d’un accident.

Elles se retrouvent complètement seules et vont devoir se battre, s’adapter, vivre et grandir autrement, faire plus confiance à la forêt et ses inépuisables richesses qu’aux hommes et à la civilisation. Leur passion respective, la lecture pour Nell et la danse pour Eva, suffiront-t-elles pour survivre? Une vie nouvelle est-elle possible dans la forêt? Réponses surprenantes et convaincantes de la part de Jean Hegland, jeune sexagénaire à l’oeil pétillant qui partage son temps entre l’écriture (trois romans et un essai), l’apiculture, la lecture et sa famille, elle qui est mère de trois enfants et grand-mère de nombreux petits-enfants.

After her notable visit in January of 2017, California writer Jean Hegland, author of the Librairie du Midi’s 2017 bestseller, the powerful novel Into the Forest, will be back in Oron. Don’t miss her this time around! With her charming and adorable personality, Hegland hails from a region of Northern California that is surrounded by great and tall forests. And it is an understatement to say that Into the Forest takes you “for real” to the innermost depths of the forest’s heart.

 

Her most famous novel, released 21 years ago in the United States and only translated into French in 2017 by Gallmeister, recounts the life and survival of two teenagers, Nell and Eva, who find themselves deep in a Californian forest while the modern civilized world falters or perhaps even crumbles around them. The two girls are stuck in the family home in the middle of a clearing. The closest neighbors are four miles away and the closest town 30 miles away. Their mother has died from an illness and their father in an accident.

 

They find themselves completely alone and have to fight, adapt, live and grow up differently, rely more on the forest and its inexhaustible wealth than on men and civilization. Will their respective passions, reading for Nell and dance for Eva, be enough to survive? Is a new life possible in the forest? Surprising and convincing answers from Jean Hegland. Sixty-one years young and with a sparkle in her eye, mother of three and grandmother to many, she splits her time between writing (three novels and an essay thus far), beekeeping, reading and her family.

Christian Kiefer

Il est le premier à avoir dit oui pour la deuxième édition du Festival! Finaliste du Grand Prix de Littérature Américaine avec son deuxième roman Les animaux - seul traduit en français -, Christian Kiefer fait partie des plus belles surprises du catalogue de la collection Terres d’Amérique chez Albin Michel parues en 2017. L’immense Richard Ford ne tarit pas d’éloges à son sujet: «Un jeune écrivain au talent rare. Une formidable découverte».

 

Direction le Nevada et l’Idaho, entre désert vide et montagnes sauvages, avec ce roman noir à la fois thriller psychologique et magnifique récital de nature writing. Dix-huit chapitres extrêmement prenants! Les animaux offre une multitude de niveaux de lecture et de thématiques: lien d’amitié, lien homme-animal, lien homme-nature, mythologie de la seconde chance, question du rachat et de la rédemption, complexité de l’identité, grandes interrogations sur la liberté, (re)distribution des cartes sociales, rancoeur et rancune, vengeance.

 

Christian Kiefer vit en Californie où il enseigne dans la capitale Sacramento. Avant de se consacrer à l’écriture de romans, il a d’abord composé plusieurs albums de musique. Une voix de songwriter très poétique à découvrir aussi. Il a d’ailleurs composé une bande-son pour son roman Les animaux, sorti en 2015 aux Etats-Unis. Son premier roman The Infinite Tides est paru en 2013.

He was the first to say yes for the Festival’s second edition! Finalist for the American Literature Grand Prize with his second novel The Animals – the only one translated into French – Christian Kiefer is one of the best surprises in Albin Michel’s Terres d’Amérique collection 2017 catalogue. The renowned Richard Ford does not run out of praise when it comes to Kiefer: “A rare young stylist, with an abundance of vivid, engrossing stories in his brain; Christian Kiefer is a genuine find.”

 

It’s off to Nevada and Idaho, between empty desert and wild mountains. What we have with this dark novel is both a psychological thriller and a magnificent concerto of nature writing. Eighteen exhilarating chapters! The Animals offers a multitude of reading levels and themes: friendship, human-animal relationships, man and nature, the myth of a second chance, atonement and redemption, the complexity of identity, big questions about freedom, the (re)dealing of the social deck, rancor and resentment, vengeance.

 

Christian Kiefer lives in California and teaches in the capital, Sacramento. Before dedicating himself to novel writing, he composed several music albums. A very poetic songwriter’s voice to discover as well. In fact, he composed a soundtrack for his novel The Animals, which came out in 2015 in the United States. His first novel The Infinite Tides was released in 2013.

Michael Farris Smith

«Il était facile de haïr tout le reste mais se haïr soi-même était une torture.»

Il y a deux endroits au monde qui comptent pour lui: le Mississippi et la France. On espère que l'écrivain américain Michael Farris Smith garde aussi un excellent souvenir de la Suisse, où il a vécu quelque temps, à Genève, après avoir obtenu son diplôme de l'Université d'Etat du Mississippi lorsqu'il avait dans les 25 ans. C'est un job dans l'événementiel sportif lié à la NBA qui lui a permis de parcourir l'Europe de l’Ouest à travers quelque 30 villes d'une douzaine de pays. Il s'est principalement établi en France et en Suisse durant plusieurs années.

Il raconte d’ailleurs volontiers avoir lu en profondeur William Faulkner à cette période, et notamment à Genève, ce qui l'a aidé à ne jamais se sentir trop éloigné de son Mississippi natal. C'est aussi durant ces années de voyages en Europe et grâces aux lectures de Faulkner, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Dickens puis surtout de Larry Brown qu’il décide de se consacrer à l'écriture. Il quitte alors le Vieux-Continent pour revenir à 29 ans dans le Grand Sud américain où il s'inscrit au Center for Writers à l'Université du Sud Mississippi. Sa carrière d'écrivain peut commencer.

 

Quatrième auteur à répondre favorablement à notre invitation, Michael Farris Smith habite toujours «l'Etat du Magnolia», avec sa femme et ses deux filles, à Oxford, la célèbre petite ville de… William Faulkner! Plusieurs fois distingué par des prix littéraires aux Etats-Unis - salué notamment pour l'originalité et l'intensité de sa langue -, son travail et sa personnalité sont fortement marqués par son ancrage territorial dans ce «Deep South».

Il est l’auteur de nouvelles et de désormais cinq romans, puisque son tout dernier ouvrage vient de sortir aux Etats-Unis (The Fighter). Il sera traduit et publié en français en 2019, chez Sonatine, éditeur qui a publié les deux seuls romans traduits à ce jour, Une pluie sans fin (Rivers) en 2015 et Nulle part sur la terre (Desperation Road), qui a été une des belles mais trop discrètes surprises de la rentrée littéraire de l’été 2017 en France.

Two places in the world matter to him: Mississippi and France. We hope that the American writer Michael Farris Smith also has fond memories of Switzerland, where he lived for a time in Geneva, after having earned his degree from Mississippi State when he was 25 years old. A sporting events job for the NBA allowed him to travel across Western Europe through some 30 cities in about a dozen countries. He settled down mostly in France and Switzerland, where he lived for several years.

 

 

He willingly recounts how during this time he read William Faulkner extensively, and notably while in Geneva, which helped him to never feel too far from his native Mississippi. It is also during these years of European travel, and thanks to reading Faulkner, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Dickens, and of course Larry Brown, that he decided to dedicate himself to writing. At 29, he left the Old Continent to return to the Great American South where he enrolled at the University of Southern Mississippi’s Center for Writers. His writer’s career could now begin.

 

 

Michael Farris Smith, the fourth author to accept our invitation, still lives in "The Magnolia State" with his wife and two daughters, in Oxford, the famous little hometown of none other than William Faulkner! Awarded several literary prizes in the United States – praised notably for his original and intense style – his work and his personality are deeply marked by his geographical anchoring in the "Deep South".

 

 

He is a short story writer and as of now, author of five novels, since his latest book was just released in the United States (The Fighter). It will be translated into and published in French in 2019  by Sonatine, which has published his only two translated novels to date, Rivers (Une pluie sans fin) in 2015 and Desperation Road (Nulle part sur la terre), which was a beautiful – but understated surprise – at the start of the 2017 summer literary season in France.
